Many multi-level homes experience uneven hot and cold temperatures between floors. This is typically resolved with two zones — one upstairs and one downstairs. When one zone reaches its set temperature, the thermostat for that zone reduces airflow into it, pushing more air to the second zone. Can zoning be added to my existing furnace?
In most cases, yes. Existing ductwork needs to accommodate motorized dampers at the right branch points, and the furnace needs to handle variable airflow without damaging the heat exchanger (a bypass damper is often installed for this purpose). How many zones can I have?
2–8 zones is the typical residential range. Most homes with temperature complaint issues are effectively addressed with 2–3 zones. The right number depends on your home's layout, how you use different areas, and where temperature differentials are causing discomfort. More zones isn't always better — over-zoning creates pressure management challenges.
Will zoning reduce my energy bills?
