Transfers heat from outgoing stale air to incoming fresh air. Does not transfer moisture — the outgoing moisture is exhausted outside. Best choice for Calgary's climate, where winter humidity is typically too high indoors (condensation, mold risk) and needs to be reduced alongside ventilation.

Choosing Between HRV and ERV — In Our Own Words

The best choice between an ERV and an HRV is dependent on the climate and specific needs.

If your house is too humid in winter (above 60% RH) then an HRV is the better choice, as it would surely get rid of excess humidity while an ERV would tend to keep it at a high level.

If your house is too dry in winter, then an ERV would be a better choice as it helps retain humidity, eliminating the need (and cost) for you to generate it through other means.

In summer, the use of an HRV will normally increase the level of humidity inside your home, so an ERV is greater in hot and humid zones. But a dedicated dehumidifier will highly likely do the trick there. At the very least, the ERV will lower the load on the air conditioning system, even if it can't keep up with the high humidity level on the outside.

Therefore, there is not one right choice between ERV & HRV systems. It totally depends on the climate, lifestyle and the home itself.

Do I need an HRV if my home already has a furnace?

Yes — they serve completely different functions. A furnace heats air. An HRV exchanges air. Recirculating heated air doesn't replace fresh air — it just moves the same stale air around. The only way to bring in genuine fresh air while recovering heat is a dedicated ventilation system like an HRV.

How do I know if my HRV is working properly?

Signs of a failing HRV: windows fogging up or developing condensation (excess moisture not being removed), musty or stale odours despite running the unit, frost forming on the exterior intake during cold weather (defrost failure). An annual service appointment catches these before they become problems.

Can I install an HRV in a home without existing ductwork?

Yes, with a ductless (point-source) HRV installed through an exterior wall. These units ventilate one room at a time rather than the whole house simultaneously. For whole-home ventilation in a ductless home, multiple point-source units may be needed. We assess the best solution for your home's layout.

What maintenance does an HRV need?

Annual service: clean the air filters (every 2–3 months is ideal during high-use periods), inspect the heat exchange core for contamination, check the defrost system, verify balanced airflow, and confirm all dampers and controls are functioning.
