Top Cooling Solutions

Maintaining the proper temperature in your home is important to your wellbeing, to your success and to the integrity of your home.   Comfort, health and sleep quality impacted by your circadian rhythm and your body temperature, are all affected by your room environment’s temperature, and thus impact your wellness, vitality, beaty and ability to focus, in turn impacting your happiness and work success.   Excess indoor temperature also adversely affects the condition of your home as it may lead to growth of organics including mould growth.  Equally, running a whole home air-conditioner when dedicated ductless is sufficient, leads to energy inefficiency and wasted money.

Even in Calgary and area, summers can be brutally hot, especially when your windows are closed because of fire smoke.  Considering recent years heat, is your home or existing cooling system ready for the certain heat ?  The team at Alberta Indoor Comfort is ready to help you ensure that your home or office will remain comfortable throughout the upcoming heat.  For nearly thirty years, our family-owned company based in Calgary, AB, has provided reliable and affordable cooling systems maintenance, repairs and installation of new and upgraded air conditioners throughout the area.

Until recent, one in four homes in Calgary area owned air-conditioning, however with the recent years’ increasing heat and smoke stresses, more homeowners are investing in cooling systems for their families’ comfort, in their homes, townhouses and condos.

When it comes to cooling your home or home-office, your first thought may be a central air conditioner, however you have several options to choose from to address your comfort objectives.  Selecting the correct solution for your unique requirements is where the Alberta Indoor Comfort team excels.

Let’s review your potential choices:

WHOLE HOME AIR CONDITIONING INSTALLATION

Living in Calgary area, you’ve most likely seen homes with central air conditioners which typically have a cube shaped, 2-3 feet long on each side, condenser located on the exterior of the home.

Central air conditioning uses an evaporator coil (located on top of your furnace/fan-coil), a condenser coil, and fan motor to push cold air throughout the house.  When properly sized and in proper working order, central air conditioning can cool a home by 10-15 degrees.   Central air conditioning systems use your home’s furnace or fan-coil to push the cool air through your existing ductwork;  for clarity, it is the blower in the furnace or fan-coil is what runs when air-conditioner comes on, not the entire furnace.

Heat is moved from the inside of your home to the outside using a refrigerant fluid.

calgary-whole-home-central-air-conditioner-ac-install-alberta-indoor-comfort-banner-img

This refrigerant is carried from the outside located condenser coil in the form of liquid to the evaporator coil where it is turned into gas as it absorbs the heat energy, cooling the surface of the evaporator coil where the air passes over it and becomes cold.  Once the air is cooled, your furnace blower pushes it through the ventilation ductwork running throughout your house.

Benefit of the central system is its installation (typically) and operating simplicity since it requires the addition of a single rotating condenser and interior evaporator.   Drawback is that it does require appropriate ductwork, and every room in your home is supplied with the same cool air, irrespective of your family’s desire, potentially resulting with individual rooms hat may be too cold or too hot;  also, cooling the entire home to satisfy a single room (eg. bedroom) will cost you money.  A potential challenge that many homeowners face is that their ductwork leaks, on average 35%, and the cold air is lost into the walls before getting to your desired destination – we do have a solution for that.

Ductless Mini-Split

  • You’ve likely seen these mini-split systems in your travels since living in Alberta, you’ve probably taken a winter break in a warm destination.   Although historically not very popular locally due to their perceived complexity, the ductless mini-split air conditioning systems have been used across the world for many decades.  Since these systems do not require ductwork for the delivery of cooled air, the ductless system can be installed in any location of your home;  they are also a great solution for additions, renovations and for reducing your utilities costs.

  • Ductless mini-split air conditioner systems are also fantastic because of the speed with which they cool your desired space, typically in less than ten minutes.  This also makes them great to support the temperature swings of the ladies going through The Change.
  • Ductless mini-split systems are available in both single zone and multi-zone configurations.  Single zone means that the external condenser is connected to a single evaporator coil “head” in your home, whereas the multi-zone systems allow multiple evaporator heads to use the single outside condenser.

    • Each interior head can be unique temperature adjusted independent of other heads, thus allowing each room to have its own temperature environment.
Ductless mini-split exterior condensers are typically available as side discharge units, thus have a slimmer profile as compared to central AC condensers and thus take up less space and are great adjacent to tighter pathways and lot footprints.
Ductless mini-split systems are available with several interior evaporator heads to fit your unique requirements, including high wall unit, one way cassette, ceiling four-way mini cassette, floor/wall console, duct or multi-position air handler unit.
Samsung mini-split systems are also standard equipped with SmarthThings automation, allowing you to connect your entire home’s systems using a single app on your mobile device.

MECHANICAL VENTILATION

  • Not everyone needs or desires to reduce their home’s temperature to the comfortable 17-19 degrees Celsius, as some howe-owners are comfortable with low to mid twenties Celsius temperature.   Enter the “summer fan”, an approach that relies on ventilating your space with refreshed air, drawn from the exterior of the home (make-up air) and/or basement of your home where it may be a few degrees cooler than the space which you are desiring to reduce the current temperature.   Typically, the summer fan approach works by using the blower from your furnace or air-handler to circulate the cooler supply air and mixed return/make-up air through out your home, thus resulting in this breeze making the indoor temperature seem cooler.
  • Of the fraction of the homes that have this feature already available, some have this fan-ON switch located adjacent to the furnace, while others provide the convenience of the fan-ON feature wired into their thermostat.   Many homes have neither as the initial installer was likely focused on reducing cost.  We can help you install either alternative. Benefit of using this ventilation approach is the low investment, if any if you already have it available.
  • Drawback is that this alternative does not provide the cooling level that most of us really desire, especially for sleep. Also, if outside air is polluted with pollen or fire smoke, your home will fill with particulates which may lead to breathing hardship as the fan will likely be running non-stop to achieve any cooling (unlike a properly sized air conditioner).

  •   A potential challenge, similar to central air conditioning, that many homeowners face is that their ductwork leaks, on average 35%, and the circulating air is lost into the walls before getting to your desired destination, also frequently spreading the dust and pollutants sucked from the walls/ceilings through out your house – we do have a solution for that.

AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

  • Majority of central air conditioning and many ductless mini-split systems come in a cooling-only configuration.  A heat-pump system, a well proven advanced technology, in addition to cooling your space (similar to central whole home and ductless mini-split systems), also allows you to heat your home during cooler periods.  For heating periods, certain heat pump systems are actually as high as 300% efficient, as compared to your high efficiency furnace running at only 97% efficient.  You still keep your furnace to supplement during deep freeze, but over 90% of the year, the heat-pump provides sufficient heat at its very high efficiency.

Effectively, think of the heat-pump as cooling with the option of running the system backwards to heat your home during the shoulder spring/fall season and into big part of the winter, even in Calgary, when using max heat systems. Basically, you invest in a two-way air conditioner which running in reverse provides the benefit of heat;  it’s like killing two birds with one stone, and saving on utilities.

Heat-pumps units are available for both central and ductless mini-split applications.

For clarity, the prior explanation refers to air-source heat pumps, meaning that the energy (heat) exchange occurs with the exterior ambient air, unlike the ground source heat pumps that utilize the deeper ground buried piping or wellsand require much higher investment and meaningful revisions to your backyard.  Both are a great option and we can support you with both technologies, understanding that most homeowners will choose air source heat-pumpapplication.

Portable A/C

  • A portable air conditioner is designed to conveniently cool the air in specific locations in your home, without the need for higher investment systems like discussed above. Portable cooling systems such as AC and evaporative coolers (next section) stand out for their compact size and easy portability, cooling small rooms and spaces.

Unlike fixed systems, a portable system does not require installation in a specific place (other than close to a window to reject heat) or permanent holes in walls, saving you installation costs.

  • While convenient for their speed of installation, portable air conditioning systems are seldom the best choice for homeowners since they are loud, more expensive to operate than permanent systems and require access to the exterior to dispose of the heat - picture six inch plastic pipes protruding to the outside, assuming that you have an openable window in the room to cool.

House/Ceiling Fans for Cooling

  • Well-placed fans may be sufficient to maintain some comfort during warm seasons, providing a breeze that makes the air feel cooler as compared to unventilated static, lingering air spaces.  Opening your windows may provide supplemental cooler air for your fans to move throughout your home, especially during the night, however any smoke, allergens, smells or even noise then have a clear pathway into your home.

Window/Built-in Wall Air Conditioners

  • Built-in wall air conditioners, also known as through-the-wall air conditioners, are air conditioning cooling units designed to be permanently installed in a wall of a specific room, typically under windows – you’ve likely seen them in some hotels.  They differ from window air conditioners in that they provide a more secure home however this requires a sleeve, pass-through framed through the exterior wall at the location where the built-in air conditioning unit will be mounted.  Depending on location, this pass-through may require structural modifications to the wall.
Built-in wall air conditioners offer several benefits, including:
  • Built-in wall air conditioners offer these great benefits as compared to the portables, however they also require a more involved installation process.  The built-in system also has meaningful benefits as compared to a ductless mini-split system, such as cooling capacity, necessity to locate on an exterior wall, and noise level.   Typically, the built-in system requires a lower investment than a ductless mini-split, unless structural changes are required to accommodate the wall pass through sleeve.
  • Space efficiency
  • Secure, permanent solution
  • Energy efficiency
  • Size, cooling capacity
  • Heating option
  • Lower noise compared to portable
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Customized cooling control
  • Evaporator Cooler

    • In summary, maintaining the correct for you temperature in your home is essential for comfort, health, energy efficiency, property preservation, sleep quality, and humidity control.  Choosing the appropriate cooling solution for your home is a decision that should balance the technical requirements of your unique home, regulatory and bylaw code requirements, your lifestyle desires and your expectations of your service provider including warranties, guarantees, technician expertise and background (criminal check, drug and substance use), respect for your home and timeliness of support to you.

When Your Air Conditioner Needs Serviced

Many people don’t think about their air conditioner until it stops working, but did you know your air conditioner usually gives you signs saying it needs serviced? Here are five to know.

    • Warm Air Blows – If your ac unit blows warm or hot air, it could be a damaged compressor or a leak of the refrigerant.
    • Liquid Pooling – Any moisture or pooling of liquid around your ac unit shows a problem. Sometimes it can be minor such as a blocked drain tube, while other times it can be serious, such as leaking refrigerant.
    • Banging or Grinding Sounds – Typical air conditioners run quietly, so if you notice any strange sounds such as whining, grinding or banging, it’s time to call in an air conditioning contractor.
    • Foul Odours – The air coming out of your ac unit should be clean and fresh, so if it’s foul smelling, it means you have a problem such as mould build up.
    • Different Room Temperature – Ideally, your ac unit should keep each room the same temperature, and if it’s not, it could be a problem with the thermostat.

    • How to Maintain Your Air Conditioner

To keep your air conditioner in tip-top shape and lasting as long as possible, you must perform routine maintenance on it. Here are a few tips.

    • Raise The Temps — If you raise the thermostat just one degree, you can save money on your energy bills and put less wear and tear on your system.
    • Do Annual Inspection — Call a professional air conditioning contractor in every spring to perform maintenance and ensure your system is ready to go once summer arrives
