Choosing the Right Thermostat for Your Home
Newer thermostats are more intuitive than ever, and built for easy programming, thanks to the simple controls and touchscreen displays. Many can connect to your home's WiFi, allowing you to change the temperature at home by using an app on your smartphone no matter where you happen to be. Smart thermostats can also automatically detect your local weather. They "remember" your preferred indoor temperature by utilizing algorithms.
Still, choosing the right thermostat can be quite a challenge to some. Here are a few important considerations to keep in mind when shopping for a smart thermostat:
Consider Your Existing HVAC System
Keep in mind that not all thermostats support all HVAC systems. For example, some newer thermostats do not support heat pumps. Also, if your heating and cooling systems are separate, you may have to install a separate thermostat for each system, and each zone in your home.
Consider the Wiring in your Current Thermostat
Many programmable thermostats work with the older low-voltage wires but newer models may require a common wire to provide power for digital displays and WiFi. If you aren't sure what type of wiring your existing thermostat has, Alberta Indoor Comfort can help you with that.
Do you want a Smart thermostat or a programmable thermostat?
If you only want a basic thermostat that you can program, a non-connected thermostat is what you need. These models are also much less expensive than the connected thermostats. Do you want to control the thermostat with voice commands, an app, or do you just want the thermostat to memorize your preferred temperatures? If this is the case, you will want a smart thermostat, with features like GPS capabilities.
- Programmable Thermostats - Since these models are not connected to your WiFi, you will have to manually set the temperature and the cycles of your HVAC system on the thermostat itself. This way, you'll be able to choose options to schedule or adjust your home's temperature on the times you specify.
- WiFi Smart Thermostats - These thermostats allow for control with your smartphone or computer. Many have more than one sensor to monitor temperatures in different rooms for more individualized comfort. Others "remember" your temperature choices and use that memory to set your heating and cooling schedule.
